Dailey & Vincent brings audience to their feet during their recent performance at The Walker Center

The crowd gave two standing ovations while the band sang the gospel song, He Touched Me, and the Christmas song, Mary Did You Know. It was a full house with close to a sellout crowd. Their version of Mr. Grinch was a fan favorite of the evening. The crowd sang along to traditional Christmas tunes and enjoyed two complete hours of quality music. This event was sponsored by Carolina West Wireless.

The next Walker Center Season Show will be Travis LeDoyt, known as “the world’s best” at portraying young Elvis Presley in his prime in the 50s and 60s, with local musician Presley Barker opening on January 28…a show you do not want to miss!

Vulcan Materials Company scholarship recipients named

Wilkes Community College (WCC) announced the 2021-2022 Vulcan Materials scholarship award recipients. Vulcan scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program and range between $250 to $1,000 based upon the need.

WCC congratulates 2021 Respiratory Therapy graduates

Wilkes Community College congratulates the following 2021 Respiratory Therapy graduates: Kendra Carter, Wilkesboro; Melissa Edwards, West Jefferson; Kristen Hubbard, Statesville; Lauren Mathis, North Wilkesboro; and Cassie Shepherd, North Wilkesboro. The class was taught by Vickie Bell, Clinical Education Coordinator/Instructor; Amber Gambill, Instructor; and Tori Johnson, Instructor. Billy Woods is the director of the Respiratory Therapy program. The students graduated on May 11, 2021.

“I am so proud of each of these students. They had to change gears in learning styles and had many obstacles to overcome during their clinical education due to COVID 19. They have proven they are more than capable to do what it takes to succeed in an often chaotic and stressful environment, said Vickie Bell, MRSC Clinical Education Coordinator/Instructor. “I have no doubt in their abilities and am proud to have been a part of this journey with them.”

WCC students complete Work-Based Learning program

Two WCC students recently completed their Work-Based Learning experience through BROC’s (Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission) Senior Nutrition Services. Lasada Howell and Victoria Jolly are both second year WCC Human Services students. While the majority of the work was completed online, Howell and Jolly were able to assist BROC staff and local businesses to collect donations for on online auction benefitting the Pet Assistance for Wilkes Senior (PAWS) program. They also planned and coordinated a successful bake sale for the program. “Congratulations to Lasada and Victoria on a successful event,” stated Beth Foster, WCC Work-Based Learning director.

Wilkes Community College congratulates Randy Gambill, lead instructor for Information Technology/Network Management for being recognized as an Advanced Level Instructor for Cisco Networking Academy for 2019.

The Walker Center was honored to host Jimmy Fortune and Craig Campbell on Thursday, October  17. “Jimmy brought to the stage a very humble heart giving all his thanks and blessings to God and giving the audience a pleasing performance of his famous song, ‘Elizabeth’,” stated Tabitha Hudler, Senior Business Operations Specialist. Campbell cranked up today’s country, but also brought to the mix a beautiful collection of piano music, including “The Dance” by Garth Brooks; “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen, giving his little girls the credit to him knowing the words; and “All of Me” by John Legend.

Texas Tenors has audience on their feet

The Walker Center was honored to host The Texas Tenors, the most successful music group and third highest-selling artist in the history of “America’s Got Talent,” on Thursday, September 12. The Tenors received a standing ovation for their rendition of a song from the Broadway hit musical, “Les Miserables.” Their enthusiasm spilled over into the crowd as they came off stage during their performance of the Bruno Mars song ”Just the Way You Are” and the performance of their original single “Boot Daddy” had the audience on their feet, swaying back and forth.

The North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants awards scholarships annually to accounting students across the state. Rachel Prevette, accounting student at Wilkes Community College, recently won a $1,500 scholarship.

Prevette lives in the Hunting Creek community of Wilkes County. After graduation, she plans to continue her education in Accounting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she will pursue a master’s degree in accounting and eventually obtain her license as a Certified Public Accountant.

“I am blessed and thankful to be surrounded by such wonderful people here at Wilkes Community College who open up new opportunities for me and who are helping me to achieve my goals,” stated Prevette.

Since 1980, the North Carolina CPA Foundation has worked in partnership with the North Carolina Association of CPAs to provide scholarships and opportunities for students to explore the accounting career and understand the opportunities that come with the CPA credential. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over $1.8 million in scholarships, impacting almost 1,600 accounting students in our state.

Santa will visit WCC on December 9

The public is invited to visit with Santa Claus on the campus of Wilkes Community College on Sunday, December 9, from 1-3 p.m. Santa will be in the Alumni Hall Commons located on the lower campus. Children will have the opportunity to get their photo made with Santa and to share their Christmas wish list with him. WCC Rotaract Club will take photos for purchase as a club fundraiser or parents may use their own cameras to take photos.

“The WCC Rotaract Club is a service club for students,” says Beth Foster, club advisor. “The fundraisers held by the club help benefit local efforts such as Make A Difference Day, and JDRF One Walk (juvenile diabetes), campus activities such as Suicide Prevention Event, Community Easter Event, Breast Cancer Awareness, Clean Sweep of Collegiate Drive and Fall Festival. The Rotaract Club is affiliated with the Rotary Club of North Wilkesboro.”
